The Westerschelde Ferry has gone cashless as of 1 January 2023. This means that you can now only pay by debit or credit card in the terminal. We have made this decision so we can help our passengers faster and because it is safer for our service staff and our passengers.

Indeed, cash is legal tender. However, the central government has stated that retailers and businesses can decide for themselves which payment methods they accept. For example, supermarkets may refuse 1 and 2 cent coins and round amounts up or down to 5 cents, and retailers and petrol stations may decide not to accept bills of 100, 200 or 500 euros.

It has been common practice in public transport not to accept cash, and Westerschelde Ferry are now doing the same.
